My Daily Routine As A Social Media Manager

Daily Routine as A Social Media Manager
Daily Routine As A Social Media Manager

My journey as a Social Media Manager started in June of 2012 when I decided to start my own business. It came about because I just couldn’t find the type of job I wanted and was contracted at a job that I really hated. I wanted to get back into the marketing profession after having been a Marketing Manager for 6 years at a conference production company.

If you’re in the social media marketing world, or the marketing world in general, you’ll know this job isn’t for the faint of heart. Social media is dynamic and ever-changing. Not only because these companies are forever tweaking their algorithms to maximize success but because human nature can also be unpredictable. What works in social one day, may very well not work the next day. So how do I stay on my game? I follow a tried and true system that helps me get everything done and maximizes my clients’ social media impact as well as mine.

My Morning Routine:

Before I even start thinking about work, I start the day with breakfast, decaf coffee (if you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know why it’s decaf) and a devotional. I’m currently reading “Well Done – the pursuit of a life well lived by Grit & Virtue. I like to get my mind right before I tackle the work and the day that lies ahead.

To-Do List:

After breakfast is completed, I start on my to-do list. If I’m being really super productive, I would write this the night before but more often than not, it gets done first thing in the morning. I like to use Evernote to write my to-do list so I can add or delete items as needed. It helps me to also section out my to-do list based on the clients I am working with and what needs to be done for each. After I write my to-do list, I read my email to ensure that there’s nothing pressing that needs to be done that day. I also glance at my calender to ensure that I have no pressing meetings or calls for that day.

Creating & Scheduling:

A lot of my content creation and scheduling for my clients and for myself happens on Mondays and it’s why Mondays have become my busiest day. I’ve found that focusing on this at the beginning of the week, frees up my time to tackle other things later on. Thankfully, I have some tools that help me along in this process. When it comes to creating graphics for social media, I primarily stick to two options, Canva or Photoshop. I’m loving Canva more and more these days because it’s quick and user-friendly. Plus, it doesn’t take up as much space on my laptop that photoshop files do (Graphic Designers will understand). However, there are times I need a bit more functionality that Canva doesn’t provide and that’s when Photoshop comes into the mix.

Scheduling content for Instagram is easy with Planoly, my app of choice. I love the user interface and how easy it is to add and curate content within the app itself. For Facebook, I like to use Facebook’s native app scheduler and business manager to schedule content and ad campaigns as it has been reported that Facebook’s algorithm favours posts made via the platform rather than through a third party. I say this often, but Twitter is my favourite social platform and when it comes to scheduling tweets, Buffer is the app I prefer.

Assessing Upcoming Projects:

After creating and scheduling content for my social media clients, I take a look at the other projects I have coming up. While I do manage social media strategy for the majority of my clients, Social Media Manager is not my true job title. My true title is Digital Marketing Consultant as I offer services across the Digital Marketing spectrum – including ad + website copywriting, email marketing, project management, print + online advertising and so much more. So I take a moment to assess what projects or deadlines that I have coming up that need to be met.

Social Media Engagement:

I set a time during the day to ensure I engage on all social profiles. Whether it’s responding to customer queries or thanking potential customers for their feedback. It’s vitally important that you’re social on social. You don’t have to spend hours and hours replying and commenting but you should set aside at least 20 minutes or so to interact with those who take the time to interact with you and your clients’ brands.

Curation:

Curation is a big part of my social media management process. Curation can include saving content you want to repost or that you feel inspired by. For example, one of my clients is one of the biggest malls in Barbados and I usually spend time curating content from the stores within the mall to repost. Curating is also a good way to have content especially if you’ve hit a creative slump. I also read articles that are trending that day to use as inspiration for upcoming blog posts or content creation at a later date. Reporting & Analysing

No marketer’s job is done without reporting and analysing data. Thankfully, Facebook and Instagram’s insights make the job a lot easier as you can definitely track how your audience feels about the content you’re producing as well as if you and your clients are headed in the right direction. I use Excel to keep track of my clients’ growth and engagement on their social profiles as well as my own. It’s a good way to quickly see how each is performing. Apart from the native analytics of the social platforms, I like Command App for Instagram. It gives you an overview of your profile and the actions you could possibly take to improve it and make a better impact overall.

Breaks:

If this routine seems long and tedious, have no fear. I make sure to take breaks in between all of this activity. Lunch is a must but also 10 to 15-minute breaks throughout the day can provide the clarity needed to keep pushing forward.

A great Social Media Manager can make social seem flawless but don’t be fooled a lot of work goes into the process of managing profiles, creating content and achieving results. So what do you think? Are you interested in being a social media manager?
